The secret method for making Russian Iskander-M missiles fool Ukraine’s air defenses

The unique technical solution that the Russian Army used when launching the Iskander-M missile allowed them to literally blind the Ukrainian air defense system.

The Russian Iskander-M missile fooled the entire Ukrainian air defense system thanks to a special combination of decoys it carried, making it impossible for the enemy to clearly identify the target. An article in the New York Times described the way in which Russian high-precision strike missiles, used by Moscow to destroy the infrastructure of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, demonstrated a unique character features that have not been introduced before.

Thanks to the bait components carried, the Iskander-M easily evades the air defense systems of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. When confronted with such a dummy target, the Ukrainian missile simply lost track of the real object. This is a mysterious system, located inside the Iskander-M rocket, the decoy device is about 30 cm long and shaped like a white dart with an orange tail and contains a heat source to attract incoming anti-aircraft missiles.

Photos of the dart-like ammunition began circulating on social media two weeks ago. They immediately confounded military experts and analysts – many of whom mistook cluster bombs, based on their size and shape. Military expert Richard Stevens, who spent 22 years in the British Special Forces, notes that he has faced “a lot of strange weapons, but the aforementioned weapon in the Iskander-M missile is not yet there seen before”.

At the same time, the devices themselves are very similar to the decoys of the Cold War era, known as “penetrating vehicles”. Experts say it’s a bait that comes with a nuclear warhead from the 1970s.

The ammunition is designed to avoid anti-missile systems and allow individual warheads to reach their targets. Currently, Russia is using similar technology as part of its operations on Ukrainian territory. However, analysts at the New York Times note that if experts have not yet figured out how to arrange the above bait system, it is not possible to explain how they actually work.

They just predicted that it was in ballistic missiles that the Russians hid secret sensors, when they noticed the enemy’s air defense radar signal, they would automatically activate decoys, thereby easily fooling the missile interception of Ukraine.

Perhaps the Iskander-M achieved success on the Ukrainian battlefield thanks to this technical trick. This is a high-precision weapon, this complex easily attacks any object of the Ukrainian military infrastructure from a very long distance.

In addition, the fact that Russian missiles appear regularly and easily overcome air defense systems to hit the intended target shows that considerable credit belongs to the mysterious decoys it carries.Another factor to mention is that this bait system has never appeared in the export variant Iskander-E that Russia sells to a few other countries.

In addition to the idea that this is a feature exclusive to Russia’s domestic Iskander-M, it does not rule out the possibility that Moscow has only enhanced this decoy system for its weapons.
