Although the exact nature of the explosions is uncertain, local media reports that rockets were fired at the Lviv neighbourhood of Zhitomir. According to a knowledgeable source cited by Sputnik, more than ten missiles fired from the Caspian Sea into Ukraine.
The explosions occurred as Ukraine was on high alert following a large-scale Russian raid on October 10 on a number of cities, including those far from the front lines.
Ukraine’s military said Russia launched at least 84 missiles, using 24 drones for the attack. The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed: “Russian armed forces launched a large-scale attack with high-precision long-range weapons against Ukrainian military, communications and energy targets. attack was achieved. All designated targets were hit”.
Moscow emphasized that this was a response to the bombing of the Crimean bridge that Russia accused was related to Ukrainian special forces.
Viktor Bondarev, head of the Russian Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said the missile strike on a series of cities in Ukraine marked the start of “a new phase” in the special military operation in Ukraine. Ukraine and Russia will take more resolute actions in the near future.
Ukraine’s allies and partners in the West have unanimously criticized the attack and pledged to continue to provide security assistance to Kiev.
