UN warns of outbreak of global conflict because of war in Ukraine

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that the world is approaching a global conflict in the context that the Russia-Ukraine war is still in a stalemate.

In his speech at the United Nations General Assembly on February 6, Guterres warned, the global community “is not sleepwalking towards a larger war but is moving (to the above scenario). with sober eyes”.

“Prospects for peace keep diminishing. The risk of escalation and bloodshed continues to grow,” said Guterres, condemning the lack of “strategic vision” that is preventing political decision-makers from taking action the right steps.

He said that the world is facing the risk of a global conflict, and the lack of vision by the parties is an irresponsible act.

He warned that the continued escalation of the Russia-Ukraine conflict could mean that the world is moving closer to a bigger war.

“We have started 2023 with a series of challenges like never before in our lifetime,” said the United Nations Secretary-General, and the world needs to wake up now.

Guterres cited the fact that US atomic scientists adjusted the doomsday clock by 10 seconds, meaning that it was only 90 seconds to midnight, the shortest time ever.

The doomsday clock is a symbolic tool created by a group of American nuclear scientists, including more than 10 Nobel laureates. The time “midnight” implicitly refers to the moment when the world is in danger of being destroyed by nuclear weapons, dangerous technologies created by humans or natural disasters, epidemics.

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine has entered its 12th month and shows no sign of cooling down. The parties have repeatedly warned of the risk of nuclear war and World War III due to escalating conflicts.
