Russia’s latest missile attack comes as Ukrainian and Western officials have speculated for weeks about the possibility that Russia is preparing to launch a new large-scale attack before February 24, which marks the one-year anniversary of Russia opening a military campaign in the neighboring country. Ukraine and the West say that Russia’s main goal is to completely control the Donbas region, including Lugansk and Donetsk regions. 

The fiercest fighting is currently concentrated in the east, especially in the city of Bakhmut in Donetsk and the surrounding area. Ukrainian officials say intelligence sources indicate that Russia is assembling forces for a large-scale offensive operation that may have begun in Lugansk.
