Israel warns of merciless response to Hezbollah

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared that he would attack Hezbollah in Lebanon “mercilessly” after this force attacked an Israeli military base, causing more than 60 casualties.

“We will continue to strike Hezbollah mercilessly in all parts of Lebanon, including Beirut,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on October 14 during a visit to a military base attacked by Hezbollah near Binyamina, south of Haifa.

The statement was made just a day after Hezbollah launched a drone attack on an Israeli military base, killing four soldiers and injuring more than 60.

This could be considered the deadliest attack on Israeli forces in the past year.

Minutes before the attack, sirens sounded in northern Israel, but there were no sirens at the targeted base. The explosive-laden drones bypassed Israel’s multi-layered defense system and hit a military training camp deep inside Israeli territory.

Over the years, Israel has built up an air defense system to provide extensive protection against short-range missile fire as well as medium- and long-range missiles, although experts warn that the system is not comprehensive.

UAVs can be operated remotely, and can penetrate and attack enemy territory more silently than missiles or rockets. Although Israeli defense systems have repeatedly shot down UAVs, many have intruded into Israeli airspace, in some cases with deadly consequences.

Drones are harder to detect for a number of reasons, an Israeli security official said: They fly slowly, are often made of plastic, and have a weaker heat signature than powerful missiles and rockets. Their trajectory is also harder to track. They can take a circular flight path, come from any direction, and fly low, making them easy to mistake for birds.

Israel is still investigating how Hezbollah UAVs easily bypassed its air defense system, which is considered one of the best in the world . Hezbollah, meanwhile, said it launched dozens of missiles and a squadron of UAVs simultaneously, overwhelming Israel’s air defense system.

Hezbollah said the attack was in response to recent Israeli attacks on Lebanon.

Nearly a year after cross-border shelling erupted, Israel has stepped up its bombing campaign against Hezbollah targets in Lebanon, including the capital Beirut, since September 23.

According to AFP , Israel’s offensive has killed at least 1,300 people in Lebanon and injured thousands more. The actual number could be much higher.

Israel has said it will not stop its campaign until it has completely repelled the Hezbollah threat. Tel Aviv has also launched a ground offensive on Lebanon’s southern border.

Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu’s administration said the military actions were aimed at creating a security buffer zone, allowing tens of thousands of people in Israel’s northern border area to return home after a year of displacement due to Hezbollah shelling.

Meanwhile, according to the International Organization for Migration, in Lebanon, fighting between Israel and Hezbollah over the past year has forced about 690,000 people to leave their homes.
