New tactics help Russia advance faster than ever in Ukraine

The tactic of using glide bombs in recent months has helped Russia attack Ukraine at an unprecedented rate since the conflict broke out.
In recent months, Russia has increased its use of glide bombs and this is making a difference in the war, CBS said.

The new Russian glide bomb is a modified version of the Soviet FAB, the first of which was the FAB-250, designed in 1946. These models were air-dropped warheads with significant explosive impact. The weapons were built using Soviet-era ammunition, some of which carried more than a ton of explosives.

However, unlike their predecessors, they are all more powerful when equipped with wings, allowing them to fly towards their target and can become a guided weapon. The cost of glide bombs is relatively low, while their destructive power is high.

Russia’s large-scale glide bomb attacks are becoming a nightmare for Ukrainian soldiers and they have even called it a “hellish” weapon.

Colonel Maksym Balagura, commander of the Ukrainian Border Guard unit, told CBS that every soldier feared for his life when he received the signal that Russia was deploying glide bombs.

“Never underestimate your opponent,” said Mr. Balagura, acknowledging that Russia’s tactics have become more sophisticated as the war drags on into its third year.

Russia now controls about 20% of Ukraine’s territory, including the vast Donbas region in eastern Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin recently announced that the speed at which Russian troops control territory in Ukraine is faster than at any time since the conflict broke out.

In February, Ukrainian troops withdrew from the key eastern town of Avdiivka after months of siege. This week, the town of Vuhledar fell to Russia after two years of fighting.

Pro-Kremlin media posted video showing Russian troops raising a flag on top of a building in the center of Vuhledar. Russian troops are also closing in on the city of Pokrovsk, a Ukrainian logistics hub in the east of the country.

Meanwhile, Ukraine relies heavily on weapons and other equipment provided by the United States and its NATO allies to ensure it can continue fighting Russia. President Volodymyr Zelensky is trying to lobby the West to allow the aid to be used to strike deep into Russian territory.

Without additional support and the ability to target Russian weapons storage and launch facilities, he argued, Moscow could consolidate its hold on Ukrainian territory and continue its advance westward, toward the border with NATO member Poland. Zelensky has repeatedly warned that the conflict in Ukraine could spiral into a direct war between NATO and Russia.

Ukraine has stepped up its efforts to convince the United States and its allies as the U.S. presidential election approaches. Many fear that U.S. policy toward Ukraine will change if former President Donald Trump is re-elected.

Mr. Trump has said that if re-elected he could end the war in Ukraine “very quickly”, but he has never ruled out pushing Ukraine to accept a deal that would allow Russia to keep some Ukrainian territory.
