The Russian government on April 14 called on all parties to “show restraint”, after Iran launched a retaliatory attack on Israel with missiles and drones.
“We are counting on the countries of the region to help resolve current problems through political and diplomatic means,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
Moscow expressed “deep concern at the latest dangerous escalation in the region”.
The country also said it has repeatedly warned that “the lack of solutions to many crises in the Middle East, mainly in the Palestine-Israel conflict area” will further escalate instability.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on April 13 had a phone call with his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir-Abdollahian.
In a statement, the Russian Foreign Ministry said that during the phone call, Foreign Minister Lavrov reiterated his “strong condemnation” of the attack on the Iranian embassy in Syria that killed 11 people, including the general high level of Iran.
Moscow generally maintains good relations with all powers in the Middle East. However, the conflict in Gaza has dented its relationship with Israel and Moscow has strengthened its military and political ties with Iran.
Russia has strongly criticized Israel during the six-month war in Gaza.
