Former US President Donald Trump said that it is possible that Ukraine will have to accept to give up part of its territory to end the more than a year war with Russia.
In an interview with Reuters on June 30, former President Trump talked about the scenario that Ukraine might have to give up part of its territory to Russia to end the war that has lasted more than 16 months.
According to Trump, the rebellion of the Russian private military group Wagner last weekend seems to have had a certain effect on President Vladimir Putin and the US should take advantage of this to create conditions for Russia and Ukraine to move towards negotiations judge.
“I hope no one dies in this war anymore. I think the best thing the US should do right now is to help bring Russia and Ukraine to the negotiating table to find a peaceful solution,” he stressed.
“You need the right mediator or negotiator and we don’t have that at the moment,” he said, stressing that everything is negotiable.
However, the scenario Mr. Trump outlined does not seem easy to implement, at least for the moment. Ukraine has repeatedly stated that it will not give in to its territory in order to have a peace agreement with Russia.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky last year laid out a 10-point peace plan that calls for Russia to withdraw all its troops from territories Moscow has seized.
On the other hand, on June 27, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said: “In terms of negotiations in the context of the Ukraine crisis, we can reiterate once again: for now, there are no preconditions. any decision for such a possibility”.
Russia says it does not see the prospect of negotiations with Ukraine at this time, although Moscow has always left the door open for peace talks to end the conflict.
The Kremlin has repeatedly asserted Russia’s position that any peace talks between Russia and Ukraine must take into account new realities, including the four regions in Ukraine that were annexed to Russia last year. Meanwhile, Kiev stressed that all peace talks must begin with Russia withdrawing all its troops and restoring Ukraine’s territorial integrity.
